Michigan Computer Science Demand

BLS reports there are 111,400 computer and mathematical workers in Michigan with 2.7% job growth in the industry. While many do not realize it, the technology and computer science industries are driving job growth in the Detroit metro area, according to reports from 2016 and 2017. First of all, Michigan ranks a solid #12 in technology employment, with only 3,000 fewer technology jobs than Georgia. The top states are California, Texas and New York. But Michigan does rank in the top five in engineering services and R&D testing labs. Changes in the automobile industry, especially with autonomous cars, is positioning Michigan overall well for growth in these job sectors. Second, it was estimated in 2016 that southeast Michigan actually outperformed Silicon Valley in R&D investment, hiring and revenue in technology.

Also, Ann Arbor, Michigan has benefited in recent years from more technology hires. Washtenaw County overall is growing more computer science technology jobs that are feeding the broader economy.

Last, some of the top jobs in technology and computer science in Michigan, are web developer, biomedical engineer, computer systems analyst, software developer and information security analyst.

CompTIA reported in 2017 there were 404,300 technology workers in the state and a net job gain of 13,160 from 2016 to 2017.

The computer science curriculum allows students to tailor their computing studies to their area of interest. As you take your bachelor’s courses, you will develop the necessary computing algorithmic fundamentals and understanding framework that allows you to keep pace in the constantly changing world of computer science.

All computer science students at the University of Michigan have many opportunities to conduct computer science research, to get active in student organizations related to computer science, and to learn about entrepreneurship to possibly start their own company. Students graduate from this bachelor’s program with the knowledge and skills to work in many computer science degree jobs or to earn a graduate degree.

This computer science program will require each student to have a good understanding of computer software, theory and hardware. But each student also has the chance to take many electives in areas such as databases, architecture, artificial intelligence, networks and graphics. Other options are interdisciplinary subjects including electronic commerce, web information systems and computer systems design.

The Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department also offers a Master of Science in Computer Science that is intended for students who want to increase their knowledge of the field. The master’s degree requires you to complete 30 credit hours to graduate, with a thesis being optional. Most students can complete this degree in one or two years. There also is a Master of Science in Engineering that may be of interest to students with more of an engineering focus in their career.
