Florida Computer Science Demand

Florida has not always been known as a major hub for computer science and technology, but in recent years, there has been solid growth. In 2016, Florida was ranked among states with the fastest growth in technology. A report from Dice.com reported that the state had a 5.64% increase in technology jobs, which made it #2 in the country.

In the first six months of 2016, Florida created almost as many technology jobs as the state did the year before. For that year, Florida only was behind Texas, where growth was 6%.

Time magazine also reported in 2017 that Orlando, Florida is one of the hot tech and computer science cities, with 149% increase in job demand in this sector from the year before. Some of the in demand jobs were project manager, software engineer, project engineer, network engineer and developer. Jacksonville also showed solid job growth with jobs in project management, systems engineering and systems administration.

Florida is generally regarded as a pro-growth state with no state income tax.

Florida Campus-Based Computer Science Degrees

The following list shows the number of campus-based colleges offer Computer Science degrees throughout Florida:

The University of Florida offers strong degree programs in computer science at the bachelor’s and master’s levels.

UF’s computer science program has strong engineering based technical strengths, as well as flexible interdisciplinary components, with a stress on good communication skills. This flexibility is becoming more important in the coming years, as computers are more important tools in most fields and industries.

Students who are in the engineering and computer science program at the bachelor’s level are able to satisfy the same requirements for their general education and get the same background in science and mathematics as other students. This bachelor’s program in computer science has a strong technical component that has several required classes that cover the vital areas of computing, and technical electives that allow the student to enhance their knowledge in their chosen specialty of engineering and computer science.

Required computer science courses at the bachelor’s level are:

  • Programming fundamentals
  • Application of discrete structures
  • Data structures and algorithms
  • Introduction to computer organization
  • Introduction to software engineering
  • Operating systems

For the master’s degree in computer science, students can choose a thesis or non thesis option. If the student selects the thesis option, you must have a supervisory committee formed no later than the conclusion of the second semester that you are enrolled. The chairman of the committee will serve as your student advisor. In both cases, the total credit hours required are 30. Required computer science courses for the MS are:

  • Computer architecture principles
  • Distributed operating system principles
  • Programming language principles
  • Computer networks
  • Advanced data structures

Related MS degrees also are available in Computer Engineering, Digital Arts and Sciences, and a master of computer science through the college of liberal arts and sciences.
