Maryland Computer Science Demand

Maryland, because of its proximity to Washington DC and Northern Virginia, is a strong center of technology and computer jobs. The federal government is largely based in the DC metro area, which means there are tens of thousands of technology jobs available in the federal government, as well as thousands more in major contracting companies that are based in the area, including Lockheed Martin.

According to a 2016 report, 1335 new technology jobs came to the state that year, which increased the number of people who are employed in technology to an impressive 182,500. This was according to a Cyberstates report that studies the national technology workforce for the technology association CompTIA. In this study, Maryland was ranked #16 in the country for technology industry employment and eighth for average technology wages. The tech industry accounts for 7% of the state’s workforce.

The University of Maryland is a great choice for an education in computer science.The Department of Computer Science offers a bachelor degree in computer science that is taken by more than 3000 students each year. The department is currently ranked as the #16 computer science department in the world. It also is ranked as the #15 program in the country according to US News and World Report. Among all public institutions, US News and World Report states this department is ranked #9 in the nation.

Students who need scholarships and grants will be pleased to know that there are at least 20 scholarships offered by the Department of Computer Science each year.

This diverse student group has diverse computer science interests from programming languages to systems to robotics and VR. Students who are an undergraduate in this program will student fundamentals in computing, such as programming languages and theory, which help students with their 400 level courses later.

The university’s undergraduate advising team helps with the academic and professional development of computer science undergraduate majors. The department also strongly encourages all students to engage in computer science research. That is why the program offers students the ability to finish a research project for credit with the course CMSC 499A. Research allows students to more effectively apply what they have learned in their computer sciences courses.

Students with a strong interest in computer science management as a career path may consider the combined Bachelor of Science and Master of Science program that allows the most talented and dedicated students to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in five years.

Students in this rigorous computer science degree program are required to satisfy all of the requirements for both degrees. But students are able to use as many as nine credits taken in the bachelor’s program towards both degrees. Students who are earning the BS/MS are allowed to double count any classes toward the bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
