Massachusetts Computer Science Demand

BLS reports there are 142,000 computer and mathematical occupations in Massachusetts, with 1.7% job growth and 40.251 workers per 1,000 jobs. CompTIA reports that the state had 416,300 technology workers in 2017, with a gain of 8130 from 2016 to 2017.

CompTIA also reported in a press release in 2017 that the technology industry in the state grew by an estimated 3% in 2016 as the economy grew more than 9400 new tech jobs that year. Massachusetts currently ranks #5 in the country for tech industry employment. The majority of these workers live in the Boston area – approximately 263,000. The state also ranks #2 among all states for their innovation score, which is based upon a study of new technology patents, tech startups and new technology businesses.

The technology industry employs almost 9% of the state workforce in Massachusetts.

The University of Massachusetts Boston offers both a bachelor of science and bachelor of arts in computer science. The BS program has been accredited by the ABET. This assures the highest quality for all degree programs in applied science, computing, technology and engineering. The bachelor of science program provides students with a strong education in practice and theory of computer science.

The BA program offers a similar education in the practice and theory of computer science. Either computer science degree can be a strong foundation for many computer science jobs in the industry. This university also offers an honors program for computer science students who do an honors thesis. The curriculum for both bachelor’s programs is focused on software development. It gives you solid training for interests in systems programming, compiler development, artificial intelligence, database management and software engineering.

Experienced computer science professionals who want to earn an advanced degree may consider the Master of Science in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts Boston. Generally, this two year degree program in Massachusetts is intended for those who desire a career in management in software development, but it also can be a solid background for graduate work that leads to a doctoral degree. This master’s program stresses integration of theoretical knowledge with practical computer science applications. The curriculum for the master’s program has a two semester software engineering capstone project.

Candidates for the master’s degree must finish at least 30 credits, and 24 of them must be in 600 or higher level courses. Object Oriented Software Development I and II, which include Software Development Laboratory I and II are mandatory courses and feature a total of 12 credits. Electives in the master’s program are:
