According to CompTIA, employment in the technology industry in Minnesota increased by 3500 jobs in 2017. It contributed more than $27 billion to the economy in the state. With 250,000 technology workers, Minnesota currently ranks #17 in the country in net technology employment. This is a healthy 8% of the workforce in Minnesota. The technology sector is now responsible for nearly 9% of the state economy, and Minnesota is now home to more than 9500 technology businesses.

Those who desire an undergraduate degree in computer science in Minnesota may consider the Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science. The computer science degree programs are similar, but the BS requires you to take two lab courses. One of them is Physics I and the other you will choose from various approved lab classes. The BS also requires upper level mathematics courses. The BA requires you to take 18 upper level courses outside the computer science department.

The BS degree may be the best choice for the student who wants to more deeply study a certain area of computer science, while the BA provides more of an overview of computer science.

Students who want to pursue a graduate level education in Minnesota may choose to earn their Master of Science in Data Science from the University of Minnesota, or a Master of Science in Software Engineering. The Data Science MS degree is a joint effort between the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, as well as the School of Statistics and the Division of Biostatistics. Together, all of these departments have a large number of faculty highly skilled in data mining and data management.
