The University of Minnesota offers a Master of Science in Data Science that offers a strong foundation in the complex science of big data and its analysis by having in one program the expertise, knowledge and educational assets in data management and collection, data analytics, data driven pattern discovery, as well as the many fundamental concepts behind each method.

Students who complete this two year master’s program will learn the state of the art methods for how to treat Big Data, and will be exposed to the latest cutting edge methods and theory that form the basis for future Big Data technology. Students also will complete a project that shows they can use the essential concepts to design new methods for innovative application areas that arise from government, business, security, medicine, biology and the physical sciences.

Each student in this two year, MS program must complete a capstone project that is overseen by a member of the faculty. One of the major features of this program is the capstone project that makes your theoretical knowledge learned in the classroom actually operate in the real world. During the project, you will go through the full process of solving a real business problem. This means from collecting and processing real world data to designing the best ways to solve the problem and to implementing a solution.
