Students who wish to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science in this state can attend the University of New Mexico. The Computer Science Department within the School of Engineering offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in computer science. The computer science department has high research activity in many areas such as high performance computing, game theory, collaborative computing, computational medicine, DNA computing, formal methods, automated reasoning and privacy, and security and computational immunology.

The bachelor of science program in computer science is intended to offer students a strong education and a broad set of knowledge and skills in computer science and computer programming. Required courses in the bachelor’s program include:

  • Computer Programming Fundamentals
  • Data Structures with Java
  • Computer Logic Design
  • Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science
  • Declarative Programming
  • Software Engineering
  • Operating Systems Principles

The bachelor’s degree has been accredited by the ABET Computing Sciences Accreditation Board, and is the only bachelor’s program in the state so accredited. The computer science department has much pride in the diversity of the faculty and students as well as the opportunities for computer science students at all levels. The computer science program features peer tutoring and many nominations for students for awards and fellowships, as well as several departmental scholarships each year.

The master of science degree has been offered at the University of New Mexico since 1973. Its purpose is to prepare students to work in computer science management for companies in all industries in the US and abroad. The master’s program has two tracks with each having its own requirements. These tracks have both a thesis and non thesis option.
