North Carolina Computer Science Demand

2018 reports note that information technology and computer science jobs are in high demand across the state, according to the North Carolina Technology Association. According to recent numbers, there were more than 20,000 information technology jobs open in the state. March and April had two of the highest months of available techology jobs in the past year.

The data showed that many of the jobs were concentrated in Charlotte and Research Triangle Park, but there are more jobs becoming available in Triad and Wilmington. Also, Jacksonville, North Carolina is seeing more technology jobs because of the strong military presence.

CompTIA reports there are 335,500 technology workers in the state as of 2017, and a net job gain of 10,100, ranking it #7 in the US. Tech jobs in most demand in North Carolina are network administrators, cybersecurity experts and software developers.

Students in North Carolina interested in computer science can earn an undergraduate, graduate or post graduate degree in computer science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Department of Computer Science at this university was one of the first in the country to be established as a fully independent computer science department. It was established in 1964, and its primary missions are to teach computer science fundamentals at the bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. levels.

The bachelor of science curriculum is based in the liberal arts and readies students to work in industry or graduate study in computer science. The bachelor of arts curriculum is designed for students who want to study computer science as well as another discipline. The master of science and Ph.D. programs are designed for students who want to know the application and design of real computer systems as well as computer theory that guides and supports practice. Most of the recipients of the master’s degree work in industry in organizations that range from small start ups to government laboratories to major research and development companies. The Ph.D. program will prepare you to be a teacher or researcher for high paying computer science positions in universities, government research labs, and companies in all industries.

The faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill now consists of 32 tenured and tenure track instructors. There also are 24 adjuncts, two lecturers and five research faculty. The department also features a high level of research, technical and administrative support staff. The computer science department has approximately 500 undergraduate students in computer science and 175 graduate students. Students at all levels contribute in a major way to the operation of the computer science department. They have more opportunities to work in computer science research, to teach and to attend in depth research group meetings.
