Tennessee Business Demand

According to the American Legislative Exchange Council, Tennessee is one of the most economically competitive states in the nation, making it an attractive destination for major corporations, as well as workers with business degrees. In 2018, Tennessee landed a top spot for economic competitiveness for the first time since 2008. Experts say this is due to the state having no personal income tax, the recent repeal of the death tax, as well as right to work status in Tennessee.

Tennessee is the home of several Fortune 500 companies, such as FedEx and HCA Holdings. Also, non-agricultural growth has increased the fortunes of the Tennessee economy in the past several years, with manufacturing, mining, logging and construction showing strong growth.

Tennessee Campus-Based Business Degrees

The following campus-based colleges offer Business degrees for Tennessee students:

The University of Tennessee at Knoxville features an Executive MBA in Strategic Leadership that can be completed in one year by some students. The total time commitment for the program is 20 hours per week for assignments, readings and classwork. This program combines some online learning modules with on campus courses several times per semester. During the on campus portions, students attend classes, meet with their advisors and their leadership development coaches. Three of the sessions are on campus in Knoxville, and one is a global immersion seminar that may be held in Asia, Central America or Eastern Europe.

The curriculum for the Executive MBA in Strategic Leadership will teach you to become a better business leader by honing your skills in accounting, finance, marketing and leadership with applied methodology and not through abstract problem sets. The integrated curriculum encourages students to think in a strategic way on these core business themes:

  • Business strategy: Bring value to the company through decision making with data, with a focus on finance, accounting, human capital, microeconomics and market data.
  • Integrative leadership: High impact communications, transformational leadership, negotiation techniques and executive presence.
