Maryville University is a private college based in St. Louis that was established in 1872. Its undergraduate enrollment is currently 2967. It is ranked as the #165th best national university by US News and World Report for 2018. The John E. Simon School of Business offers a one and two year online MBA.

Favorite Features

Variety of flexible MBAs offered

Students with full time jobs and personal obligations find that Maryville University offers several convenient formats to earn their MBA degree. The online MBA can be completed in only one year for some students with sufficient prerequisite courses completed. The program is 100% online and you do not have to visit the campus at all.

Other students complete the program full time in two years.

Cybersecurity concentration is offered

One of the hottest MBA concentrations in business today is cybersecurity. There are many good jobs available for cybersecurity professionals, with demand in this field increasing by 20% in the next several years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Not every MBA program offers this specialty.

MBA program is accredited by the ACBSP

One of the major business education accreditation organizations is the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). This is a well known accreditation agency and its seal of approval means the program has met a high quality standard in business education.

Ranked as a best value college for 2018

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance recently ranked Maryville as a best value in private colleges. It also has been ranked as a top college for 2017 by Forbes.

MBA program offered at Scott Air Force Base

For military members in the St. Louis area, you have the opportunity to take the MBA program at nearby Scott Air Force Base. If you are deployed during the program, you can transition to the online MBA program.

Reasonable tuition cost

Tuition for the MBA program is only $725 per credit hour for all students. This helps many students to get through college with minimal debt.

Least Favorite Features

Low peer assessment score in US News and World Report

One of the ranking factors in the rankings systems at US News and World Report is peer assessment score. This is a ranking from 1-5 that indicates the level of respect that the program is given by its peers in the education industry.

The ranking for the Maryville MBA program is only 1.5 out of 5. This indicates that other professionals at competing colleges have a low opinion of the quality of this program. This is an area of concern for a professional who is spending two years and thousands of dollars to earn an advanced degree.

US News and World Report ranks faculty credentials poorly

US News and World Report also ranks the faculty credentials and training of the professors in the MBA program. They are ranked only #156. This suggests that the quality of the faculty at Maryville is not as good as many other colleges.

Most applicants are accepted

For 2017, 179 applicants applied to the MBA program and 168 were accepted for a 94% acceptance rate. The fact that it will accept almost anyone who applies suggests the program may not be very high quality. The more selective the program, the better the quality of students and the quality of the professors who teach the program.

Graduating from an online MBA program of questionable quality could be an issue when applying for positions at some companies. It is reported that some companies look closely at where the student earned their MBA.

Not accredited by the AACSB

This MBA program is accredited by the ACBSP, but the most well known accreditation agency is the AACSB, which has been in existence for more than a century. Employers are generally more familiar with AACSB accreditation than ACBSP, so this might be a factor when you are being considered for a position.
