The University of Alabama at Birmingham has launched a new Master of Data Science program in the fall of 2018. This program provides students with a unique chance to maximize their data science and analytics skills so they can qualify for a high paying job. The program has been designed for professionals and students who want to gain knowledge and skills to solve real-world business problems that involve large sets of data.

According to the head of the UAB Department of Computer Science, popular job sites such as Glassdoor and Linkedin are showing that data scientists are in dire short supply. This new master’s in data science program should be able to produce graduates who get the best training in the newest data theory and techniques in modeling, as well as solving real world problems with the best analytical techniques.

The UAB master’s in data science program will provide students with vital skills in data science and analytics. This will include how to apply methods and technologies that are required to make strategic business decisions, and vital skills to collect and manage huge datasets. Skills also will be acquired to implement the most efficient solutions to real world business problems.

This MS program has 30 credit hours, including 24 credit hours of computer science work and six hours of thesis research. A normal full-time student should be able to complete the MS requirements in 1.5 to two years. If you have a full class load in summer, you could complete the program in just one year.

  • Advanced Algorithms and Applications

Some of the electives you can choose include courses in big data computing, data mining, natural language processing, deep learning, data visualization and high-performance computing.
