Florida Accounting Demand

The Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants reports that one of the major areas of employment for accountants in Florida is in big business. Corporate accountants are in demand to serve as internal auditors, accounting managers, and financial control officers in the Fortune 500 companies that are located in business and tax friendly Florida. The field of accounting is also seeing more demand in Florida as more Wall Street firms are leaving New York and coming to areas such as Jacksonville, where operating costs and taxes are lower. For example, the number of employees for Deutsche Bank in Jacksonville rose from 600 to 1,000 from the end of 2009 through 2012, the New York Times reported.

The financial services industry also is seeing strong growth here, with growth four times higher than the rest of the country. Also, the total number of accounting jobs in the state increased by 14% from 2014 to 2022, with a total of 25,424 new accounting jobs. BLS states that Florida has a total of 73,900 accountants working, which is #4 in the US.

Florida Campus-Based Accounting Degrees

The following campus-based colleges offer Accounting degrees for Florida students:

The University of Florida and the Warrington College of Business offer a Bachelor of Science in Accounting that provides undergraduates with an excellent foundation in business and accounting. The focus is on preparing students for business success in a business environment that is changing regularly, and to also prepare students for a master’s program in accounting, if they desire it.

Students who are in this bachelor’s program may submit an application for early submission to the master’s program through the college’s 3/2 program. This program allows students to earn their bachelor’s degree in three years and their master’s in two years. Upon completion, they have sufficient credit hours to sit for the Uniform Certified Public Accountant examination to work as a CPA in Florida.

Some students enter the bachelor’s program with the idea of only earning their undergraduate degree and then pursuing work in the accounting field. This degree program also can serve as an excellent preparation for post-graduate studies in fields beside accounting, such as law. However, note earning your bachelor’s degree in accounting only will not provide you with enough hours to sit for the CPA exam.

Required courses for the bachelor’s degree in accounting are:

  • Introduction to Managerial Accounting
  • Introduction to Statistics
  • Financial Accounting and Reporting
  • Business Finance
  • Cost and Managerial Accounting
  • Principles of Management
  • Principles of Marketing
  • Introduction to Auditing
  • Auditing 1
  • International Business
