The University of Omaha offers a Bachelors and Masters of Mathematics with a concentration in data science. The concentration in data science helps students to prepare for a job as a data scientist, as well as provide an excellent background for many related careers. Because data science is such a quickly developing field, the Department of Mathematics at the University of Omaha is developing partnerships with businesses to help them with their data needs and to also demonstrate the value of these students.

There are eight components of the program that ensure that each student has the data science skills they need to thrive in their careers:

  • Data visualization: Transform raw data into visual form that provides a story is a major challenge in the business world. This part of the program involves the art and science of data visualization with applications in the real world.
  • Scientific methods: Used to analyze and reduce complex data to more simple and understandable forms.
  • Statistical modeling: Most business problems are able to be modeled with sophisticated, advanced statistical methods. There are several professors with excellent backgrounds in statistics, both pure and applied.
  • Statistical computing: Students and faculty use powerful statistical software to perform difficult computations that are needed for data analysis.
  • Real world data applications: Students regularly work on real world data problems that are provided by local industry.
  • Data consulting: The department provides consulting on various data related problems to the local Omaha community. This can lay the potential for data science projects for students, as well as outstanding real world experience.
  • Data research: There are several researchers on staff with both statistics and operations research. The program intends to develop research problems in data science while collaborating with the local community.
  • Data technology: The department has a high level of access to big data technology, and the latest data science software. The school plans to expand this technology with a new data science lab soon.
