New York University has a Master of Science in Data Science that is highly selective. It is ideal for the student with a strong background in mathematics, computer science and applied statistics. The degree is focused on development new and innovative methods for data science.

The curriculum for this two year program is 36 credit hours. One of the key aspects of the MS curriculum is that it features a capstone that makes the theory knowledge that you gain more operational in the real world. During this project, you will go through the process of solving real world problems from processing and collecting real world data, to designing the ideal methods to solve problems and to finally implement a solution. The datasets and problems that you engage with come from settings in the real world that are just like what you might see in academia, industry or government.

There are two tracks from which to choose. The regular data science track has six required classes and six electives. The data science big data track is focused on methods and techniques to manage, acquire, analyze and visualize large amounts of data. Students will obtain a better understanding of algorithms and complexity and get hands on experience on how to build complex solutions to many computational issues.

Students taking the data science big data track also need these courses:
