North Dakota Business Demand

US News and World Reports finds that North Dakota is the #4 state in the country in terms of its business and economic outlook in 2018. Particularly strong areas include its infrastructure at #2, quality of life at #1, education at #10 and fiscal stability at #2.

There was a time when remote North Dakota had a shrinking population but that changed with the increased production from the Bakken Formation of oil and natural gas on the border, with some of the largest deposits in the US. In the past, this oil was unprofitable to tap because it was imbedded in shale and sandstone. But new technology including hydraulic fracturing has made it profitable to extract this oil. That is why the oil and gas industries are some of the top employers in the state. As of 2014, 16% of the state’s GDP came from oil and gas.

The unemployment rate of North Dakota is only 2.6% and is one of the lowest in the country.
