The University of Utah offers several options for students who want to gain an education in data science. First, the university offers a graduate certificate in big data that is 15 credit hours in length for those who have a background in computer science and some amount of analytic experience, such as probability and linear algebra or another analytics background, possibly subjects such as machine learning, data mining, visualization, databases and algorithms.

If you want to earn a full degree, you can get either a Master of Science or a PhD in Data Management and Analysis. Most students who enter these advanced programs have a computer science degree and/or have background as a software engineer. Some students in these graduate programs also have a highly analytical background with extensive computer science background. Students in these programs will take classes in data mining, machine learning, visualization, algorithms and related classes.

Yet another good option at the University of Utah is the Master of Science in Business Analytics. This program is ranked in the top 10 nationally and is intended to offer students the skills they need to compete in a rapidly growing market for data science and business professionals.
