How to Choose an Online MBA Program without the GMAT

Let’s explore the biggest factors that should go into choosing your online MBA program without the GMAT.

Accreditation

Accreditation is crucial to your MBA degree actually meaning anything in the real world. Accreditation is how organizations signal that educational programs and institutions meet a certain level of quality and rigorousness.

Multiple levels of accreditation exist, both on the national level and the regional level. Which types of accreditation are deal-breakers for you will depend on where you live and where you intend to seek employment.

Also, keep in mind that some of the larger MBA-accrediting organizations recognize very few online MBA programs. This includes the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), one of the most well-respected accrediting institutions in business education, which lists fewer than 100 online schools among its accredited programs.

The Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) provides accreditation for most online MBA programs regardless of educational level, but it’s best to pair this with regional accreditation to ensure the program has a good reputation in the business world.

Program Length

Online MBA programs are generally designed for working professionals, as they enable an individual to pursue their education while they hold down a full-time or part-time job. However, if you’re fortunate enough not to need to work while you get your MBA, you will likely be able to complete your degree more quickly.

Most online MBA programs will take 2-3 years, while many students opt for accelerated programs that can let them finish even sooner. These programs generally involve shorter, intensive blocks of courses rather than having the material be spread out over a traditional semester length of time. Accelerated degree programs also most often operate year-round, so in just one calendar year, a student could complete a significant portion of the program’s coursework.

Some programs set a maximum time limit for students, even those who are working while they earn their degree. This is not the case with all schools, though, so make sure you read the fine print before you enroll and if your lifestyle will likely keep you from finishing within the time limit, then that probably is not the right school for you.

Admissions

While some online MBA programs do not require the GMAT, the Graduate Management Admissions Test, some others do, and even the ones that don’t have GPA and work/professional experience requirements you will need to be aware of before you apply.

For all the programs you’re considering, you should be sure to thoroughly research their admissions requirements, both what’s published by the school and what you may be able to learn from the anecdotal experiences of others.

Most schools will take a few things into account:

  • Test scores: While the schools you’re considering don’t require a GMAT, some may require or recommend the GRE or TOEFL.
  • GPA: Most schools have minimum GPA requirements, but even those that don’t have a cutoff will want to examine your undergraduate transcript and GPA.
  • Professional experience: Many schools will accept 3-5+ years work experience in lieu of a strong GPA or impressive undergrad transcript, and most schools consider relevant work experience a major leg up and something that can set you apart from the crowd.
  • Personal statement and letters of recommendation: You should write a unique personal statement for each school you apply to, and you should line up three letters of recommendation from professors, mentors or others who have been influential in your past and can attest to your fitness for business school. Programs will weight these things differently, if they require them at all, but it’s a helpful exercise to gather these anyway.

Costs

Those with an MBA can expect to command much higher salaries than those without, and that bump in salary is reflected in the cost of obtaining the degree. Among advanced areas of study, MBA programs are some of the most expensive, though there is a huge degree of variation, even among online MBA programs.

Program length, institution type and organizational reputation all can contribute to the cost of an MBA program. Even for online programs, differences between in-state and out-of-state tuition can be significant.

Students can expect to spend around $40,000 total for an online MBA at an out-of-state school. Also, most colleges and universities levy a series of fees, from application and registration fees to technology fees, not to mention the cost of textbooks. Plus, if the program ever requires you to visit a campus, you’ll likely need a parking pass and would have to pay for potentially thousands of miles of travel.

Curriculum

For students with a very specific area of focus, your choice of schools that specialize in that area may be quite limited. But for those seeking a more generalized business education, you should research the required courses as well as what electives are offered.

While you’re not usually required to choose an area of focus or emphasis in an online MBA, many institutions offer a variety of concentrations, including finance, human resources, entrepreneurship, real estate, supply chain, information management and many more.

If you have a passion in one area and are certain that’s what you want to focus on in your professional career, an MBA with an emphasis in that area can help signal to potential employers that you have specialized training, which can set you apart from other applicants.

Reputation

While times are changing, there are still many people who consider an online education less rigorous or impressive. That’s one reason why it’s important to ensure that the institutions you are targeting are of excellent standing and have faculty that are well-respected in the fields in which they are experts.

Accreditation can be part of this, though remember that most online MBA programs are not accredited by the AACSB and that researching regional accreditation is important. In addition to accreditation, consider whether the organization produces graduates who make an impact in the field of business that interests you most.

Just as some companies make themselves more attractive to top talent and build brand awareness not just for consumers but for staff, a good online MBA program will make you want to attend by boasting an expansive network of faculty, staff and alumni who can vouch for the experience and preparation you could expect if you enrolled there.

Location

A typical online MBA program does not require you to be on-campus regularly, but many schools will require on-site visits from time to time. For instance, you could be required to visit the campus to register, and many programs that include capstone research projects could require an on-site visit as part of that process.

Additionally, even if your online MBA never requires you to step foot on campus, the organization’s alumni network is likely to be strongest near where the college or university is located, and having connections in the real world is probably the single best way to get a great job.

Research whether you will be required to visit campus and determine if the trip is possible for you, including if you will be able to take the time from work and if you can afford the cost of travel.

Technology

Most higher education programs, even those that take place on-campus, require learning some type of educational software or app, such as Canvas or Blackboard. These tools are even more important for online students, as the face-to-face communication of traditional education isn’t as readily available.

In addition to the educational management program or programs you’ll need to learn, the class material could require your computer to have certain programs, such as video conferencing apps, chat programs or email clients. Much of this will depend on individual professors and classes, so it’s often helpful to seek out a current student or graduate of your same track to make sure that you have everything you’ll need.

You’ll also need to research the methods that permit you access to various tools that are available to all students. This could include accessing online libraries or career services, job boards and calendars. You’ll want to ensure you give yourself the best chance of getting the most out of your online MBA program, and that means researching areas that traditional students probably don’t need to.

Conclusion

Every person’s life and set of goals are unique. No one educational path fits every person, even in the online MBA world. No doubt many factors will go into how you choose the school you eventually enroll in and why. But the investment in time and money that is necessary for completing an online MBA requires that you take your time and consider this decision from as many angles as possible.
