Job Duties

Business process analysts assess and evaluate different business processes, creating plans to ensure that business performance can improve. They do so by collecting information, analyzing data, and maintaining records to be used in financial planning. They must be strategic thinkers who understand strategy development, financial analysis, and decision making. Their role varies on a day by day basis, depending on what the company needs.

Typically, they work in the office during regular hours. Sometimes, they are employed directly but at other times, they are brought in as consultants. They often report to the business analyst supervisor or manager, although some work in a large team. They do not have any direct customer involvement, but their role is to improve customer relationships overall.

Other duties of a business process analyst are:

  • To identify business needs through various requests and come up with strategies to meet those
  • To take a critical look at available information from various sources in order to determine the quality of an analysis
  • To translate complex data into an easy to understand language
  • To evaluate, implement, and set business metrics so that the needs of the organization and the customer are met
  • To report on and analyze data in order to meet the needs of the organization and the customers

Where We Work

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 806,400 management analysts in 2016. The largest employers of these professionals are:

  • Professional, scientific, and technical services: 30%
  • Self-employed workers: 17%
  • Government: 17%
  • Finance and insurance: 11%

How to Become

A business process analyst is usually required to hold a bachelor’s degree who major in subjects that are related to business. Those who hold an associate’s degree and have a lot of experience may also be considered, although this is now increasingly rare.

Generally, a business process analyst will start at entry level positions, growing into consultancy. Some work as auditors, accountants, market research analysts, or computer systems analysts, for instance. Eventually, they then grow through internal and external promotions into the position of business process analyst.

Education Requirements

While the majority of business process analysts have a bachelor’s degree at least, it is now increasingly common for a master’s to be required, particularly the master of business administration (MBA). Some also hold additional certifications, such as Certified Management Consultant (CMC). Of importance is that a degree includes courses in subjects such as computer and information science, psychology, marketing, finance, accounting, economics, management, and business.

The CMC certification can be obtained through the Institute of Management Consultants USA (IMC USA). To obtain this, candidates must have sufficient education and experience, present reviews from clients, and pass a written examination and an interview. The examination focuses on the code of ethics as set by the IMC USA. Re-certification is required every three years.

The most effective business process analysts have the following traits to some degree or other:
