The following article discusses the career path of Business Intelligence Manager. Learn about how to become one, education requirements, job duties, traits and qualities, national salary outlook as well as top national employers of Business Intelligence Managers.

Job Duties

Business intelligence managers hold responsibility for the provision of data solutions that are linked to the organization’s business strategies. They manage business analysts within their department, who each use different statistical methodologies in order to resolve quantitative issues as they relate to the organization in an effort to make it more profitable.

These professionals conduct risk analysis and assessments regularly. They gather intelligence data to prepare complex reports, through which they draw strategic conclusions. They then present their findings to executives within the organization. They also ensure that company resources are deployed in an efficient manner, ensuring that all performance is at peak. They often also link closely with the HR department in relation to the recruitment, training, and retention of analytical staff.

Other job duties of business intelligence managers are:

  • Working with various data sources from across the organization and beyond to draw strategic conclusions
  • Auditing data and putting remedial solutions in place, while also training end users on how to use it properly.
  • Manage, design, and code developers in order to ensure tools, dashboards, and end user data are logical
  • Gather, analyze, and report on financial and analytical data for various projects

Where We Work

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 806,400 management analysts, which is a role similar to that of the business intelligence manager, in 2016. The largest employers of these professionals are:

  • Professional, scientific, and technical services: 30%
  • Self-employed workers: 17%
  • Government: 17%
  • Finance and insurance: 11%
  • Management of companies and enterprises: 5%

How to Become

Experience is of the greatest importance for business intelligence managers. They must also be able to demonstrate past experience in management and leadership. Furthermore, a graduate degree is commonly required, preferably in a field relating to business. Proven management and leadership skills are of the utmost importance, however.

Education Requirements

While the majority of business intelligence managers have a bachelor’s degree at least, it is now increasingly common for a master’s to be required, particularly MBA or MS degree designation. Some also hold additional certifications, such as Certified Management Consultant (CMC). Of importance is that the degree includes courses in subjects, such as computer and information science, psychology, marketing, finance, accounting, economics, management, and business.

The CMC certification can be obtained through the Institute of Management Consultants USA (IMC USA). To obtain this, candidates must have sufficient education and experience, present reviews from clients, and pass a written examination and an interview. The examination focuses on the code of ethics as set by the IMC USA. Re-certification is required every three years.

Generally, a business intelligence manager will start at the entry level position, growing into consultancy. Some work as auditors, accountants, market research analysts, or computer systems analysts, for instance. Eventually, they then grow through internal and external promotions into the position of business intelligence manager.

Traits & Qualities

The most effective business intelligence managers have the following traits to some degree or other:

  • Advanced problem solving skills
  • Advanced analytical skills
  • Strong knowledge of modern industry practices, such as the different measured profitability approaches
  • Excellent team working skills
