Job Duties

Data warehouse engineers help to build and manage data warehouse strategies, and execute these as well. This includes setting scopes for projects, choosing the tools to use, and ensuring all data needs are being met. Furthermore, they often take on a strategic approach in order to develop appropriate solutions. They do this by working together with others in the organization to brainstorm on ideas before constructing a new data warehouse.

Naturally, data warehouse engineers are incredibly proficient with data solutions. They work on their personal computer in order to map the applications that are out there and to modify them so that they are more fit for purpose. They write reports on their findings and progress. Once their ideas have been implemented, they must test them to ensure they are fit for purpose and they hold responsibility for the overall quality assurance of the system. This includes fine tuning the system, verifying its integrity, and avoiding “data bottlenecks”.

Other job duties are:

  • To be responsible for the overall technical design of data warehouse projects
  • To implement new data warehouse projects and to be responsible for their quality
  • To code and design data warehouse software and ETL, which includes correcting it later
  • To ve responsible over the storage of data from a variety of sources, including dimensional, physical, and logical models

Where We Work

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not currently hold any data in their Occupational Outlook Handbook on data warehouse engineers. This is because it is a relatively new career. Data warehouse engineers usually work for large tech companies and many of them have found employment in Silicon Valley. Others work for large scale organizations, where data warehousing is a requirement.

How to Become

A data warehouse engineer has to focus on security, working together with software developers in order to make sure their creations are fit for purpose. This means that they must set the framework and hold responsibility for the overall quality of the framework and the data. Having experience in this is far more important than any degree, although a bachelor’s is usually preferred.

Education Requirements

Most data warehouse engineers hold a bachelor’s degree level. Some have also obtained further certification. Data solutions certifications have been proven to be particularly beneficial.

Traits & Qualities

The most effective data warehouse engineers have the following traits to some degree or other:

  • Can work well under minimum levels of supervision
  • Are excellent team players
  • Are great multi-taskers
  • Have fantastic communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Can follow direction
  • Understand issues relating to data security and privacy
