Management Consultant Job Duties

Management consultants ensure that the company can improve different key elements of the business. This could be the company’s image, its management, or overall productivity, for instance. Management consultants look for potential risks and current problems, and put measures in place to overcome them.

They works with a lot of data. They create forecasts that enable the business to understand its outlook and how they currently perform. They develop diagrams of the processes within the organization and determine how these can be made better. They write coherent reports on this, attending regular meetings and keeping both the organization and the general public informed about developments.

It is also quite common for them to manage the operations they are trying to improve on. This enables them to mentor the existing manager on how to improve processes, while at the same time gaining a better understanding of the issues facing the organization as a whole.

Other job duties of a management analyst are:

  • To create new business improvement plans, make recommendations based on those, and help to implement them
  • To research, analyze, and model for specific designs and strategies within an organization
  • To train internal staff on the newly developed business processes

How to Become a Management Consultant

It is common for a management consultant to be certified as a project management professional. This means they must hold a bachelor’s degree as a minimum, but a master’s degree, and particularly the master of business administration (MBA), is more common. Additionally, they usually have experience managing specific areas of business.

Management Consultant Education Requirements

While the majority of management consultants have a bachelor’s degree at least, it is now increasingly common for a master’s to be required, particularly the master of business administration (MBA). Some also hold additional certifications, such as Certified Management Consultant (CMC). Of importance is that a degree includes courses in subjects such as computer and information science, psychology, marketing, finance, accounting, economics, management, and business.

The CMC certification can be obtained through the Institute of Management Consultants USA (IMC USA). To obtain this, candidates must have sufficient education and experience, present reviews from clients, and pass a written examination and an interview. The examination focuses on the code of ethics as set by the IMC USA. Re-certification is required every three years.

Generally, management consultants will start at entry level positions, growing into consultancy. Some work as auditors, accountants, market research analysts, or computer systems analysts, for instance. Eventually, they grow through internal and external promotions into the position of management consultant.
