Job Duties

Health information management managers (HIM) are responsible for maintaining legal compliance, patient safety, and cost effectiveness. They do this by maintaining large databases containing treatment and patient information data. An HIM manager maintains all the necessary medical documentation, such as patient data, medical records, examination and laboratory results, diagnostic records, and more. They must ensure that this data is up to date and accurate, and that it fully complies with privacy laws and ethical standards.

HIM managers obtain data from doctors, insurance companies, and patients. They enter it into the system and ensure safeguards are in place to ensure only authorized people can access it. They perform these duties in all different types of medical settings.

Commonly, HIM managers lead a team of people, ensuring that strategies are in place for the collection of data and execution of data entry. They must also have an in-depth understanding of JCAGO, HIPAA, and various other compliance regulations.

Other job duties of the health information management manager include:

  • Helping with fiscal operations such as financial reporting and planning budgets
  • Monitoring all of the department’s functions to ensure professional standards and federal and state regulatory requirements are complied with
  • Supervising how information is released and to whom
  • Supervising information technicians and others who hand medical records
  • Holding staffing responsibilities

Where We Work

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 352,200 medical and health services managers in 2016. The largest employers of these professionals were:

  • Hospitals; state, local, and private: 36%
  • Offices of physicians: 11%
  • Nursing and residential care facilities: 10%
  • Government: 8%
  • Outpatient care centers: 7%

How to Become

A HIM manager needs to have a bachelor’s degree as a minimum. Those who are Registered Health Information Administrators or Technicians are in the highest demand. They are also expected to have at least three to five years experience in keeping medical records. Those who hold a master’s degree in a subject such as business management, hospital administration, or health tend to have the best prospects.

Education Requirements

Typically, a bachelor’s degree is required in order to become a HIM manager. However, it is increasingly common for employers to look for those with a master’s degree. This is also because completing a master’s means an individual has some practical experience in health care or hospital administration and management.

Typically, HIM managers have degrees in business administration, public health administration, nursing, health management, or health administration. This ensures they have an in-depth understanding not just of health care, but also of the business that it relates to. Hence, courses in areas such as health information systems, health economics, law and ethics, strategic planning, human resources administration, budgeting and accounting, and health services management are recommended.

Work experience is incredibly important. Usually, sever years of experience working in a similar setting is required. Some people obtain this experience through clinical work, whereas others enter through finance, administration, or information technology.
