Job Duties

The role of marketing executives is wide and varied and usually depends on the exact needs of the organization. They often plan, lead, checkup on, and supervise how promotional merchandise are circulated. They often have to travel between different locations, attending trade shows where they not only showcase new products, but also learn about the competition, network, and develop new client relationships.

Marketing executives have to regularly attend meetings. Here, they can help to develop new marketing projects and ideas, or discuss whether a new computer software program may be appropriate. They often have to test new campaign ideas, monitoring their pilot results and determining consumer interest through market research.

Other job duties of a marketing executive are:

  • To write publicity material and press releases for new products
  • To develop a sales pitch for different products using traditional channels and modern forms of communication, including social media
  • To create new sales materials and determine which resources are necessary for this
  • To analyze the market through competitive research
  • To establish objectives and goals, results and deliverables for individual marketing programs

How to Become

Generally speaking, a marketing executive is someone who holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing or advertising or related field. However, they also need substantial work experience and on the job training. There is no substitute for experience in this field, in other words. Additionally, they must be committed to continuous professional development in order to remain up to date with new marketing tools and technologies.

Education Requirements

A bachelor’s degree is generally the minimum requirement for a marketing executive, as is proven experience in sales, promotions, marketing, and/or advertising. It is generally expected that a marketing executive has also completed courses in areas such as statistics, mathematics, computer science, finance, economics, management, and business law. This ensures that they are able to stay abreast of modern technological developments and how these influence the way in which marketing efforts have to be delivered. Using social media and online forms of communication, for instance, is a key element of this.

Work experience is equally important, however. Most marketing executives come from a background in marketing, promotions, or advertising. They may also have been sales representatives, public relations specialist, purchasing agents, or buyers.

The most effective marketing executives have the following traits to some degree or other:

  • Strong analytical skill
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
