Job Duties

Communications coordinators are responsible for marketing communications within the organization. Their main focus is on ensuring their business’ reputation is improved and maintained, both among internal employees and external customers and partners. They work alongside the communications manager in order to develop and execute creative projects, coordinate events, create marketing publications, and ensure the guidelines, policies, and procedures of their organization are followed.

Other job duties of communications coordinators are:

  • To help in the creation of internal and external newsletters
  • To support, create, and executive internal and external communication campaigns
  • To develop innovative communication materials and copy, ensuring these are effective. This includes the use of electronic communication

How to Become

Usually, a communications coordinator will hold a bachelor’s degree in an area related to public relations or communication. Experience is generally required to take on this position.

Education Requirements

Communications coordinators are generally required to hold a bachelor’s degree as a minimum. Usually, they have a major in areas such as marketing, communications, journalism, psychology, or advertising. Those who have taken classes in photography, art history, visual arts, communication technology and methods, sales, market research, consumer behavior, and marketing are in the highest demand.

Additionally, it is often recommended that they have completed courses in areas, such as statistics, mathematics, computer science, finance, economics, management, and business law. This is because these courses will enable a communications coordinator to best understand methods of driving traffic through communication online, an integral part of modern forms of communication.

Experience is also very important. Most communications coordinators completed an internship as part of their degree. They will then have taken up an entry level position, through which they can grow to coordinator position.
