Job Duties

Supply chain analysts hold responsibility for performance improvement at the organization. They do so by identifying what certain projects need and by coordinating with other members of staff, quality assurance professionals and engineers in particular, in order to test and eventually implement new supply chain methods. As part of their role, they must work with huge amounts of data, using this to solve issues faced by the supply chain.

These professionals are often tasked with specific projects, such as improving a warehouse stocking program’s management structure, redeveloping production methods of material goods, ensuring products come to the warehouse in a more efficient manner, expanding relationships with carriers and suppliers, and so on. Furthermore, they have to take problems and develop solutions specifically for the IT technicians, focusing on SQL analysis programs. They use this to identify the root cause of a problem and develop an appropriate solution.

Other job duties of the supply chain analyst include:

  • Gathering, reviewing, and interpreting data relevant to the supply chain
  • Using the results of analyses in order to improve the overall performance of the supply chain process, thereby reducing costs.
  • Conducing analyses through various analytical models, using the data for mathematical analysis

A supply chain analyst usually needs a specialized undergraduate degree in operations engineering, operations analysis, or a related field. It is common for organizations to look for those who have a graduate degree in business management, analysis, or related field. Furthermore, a supply chain analyst is usually expected to have at least three years’ work experience at middle management level.

Education Requirements

A supply chain analyst has to be able to manage the complexities of supply chains and logistics. As a result, a bachelor’s degree is usually the minimum requirement. Supply chain management, systems engineering, and business are common study subjects. During a bachelor’s degree, they will learn about system dynamics, database management, and operations. Furthermore, they can be exposed to common logistics software, such as RFID (radio-frequency identification).

There is no legal requirement for a supply chain analyst to become certified. However, certifications do demonstrate commitment to excellence and a broader knowledge. Hence, supply chain analysts may choose to become certified through the International Society of Logistics (SOLE) or through the American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS). Work experience and education are required for these certifications. Other options are offered through the DUA (Defense Acquisition University), which is required for those who work as a logistics analyst for the Department of Defense.

Work experience is also vitally important. A supply chain analyst will need to have gained several years’ experience in supply chains, logistics, and business. Some start in logistical support, such as clerks or dispatchers, and many have a military background.
