Job Duties

Data managers are responsible for database systems. They also create policies and procedures and ideas, and they may assign tasks to subordinates. They work together with a range of other personnel within the organization, ranging from corporate executives to data entry clerks. Therefore, they also have wide-ranging responsibilities, including things such as supervision of data collection systems and assistants in data management, ensuring the operational functions of the data system, managing data entry, preparing data reports, troubleshooting issues with data submission, and overseeing all data-related activities.

Other job duties of data managers are:

  • To create and oversee computerized databases as they are needed by the organization to complete various research studies
  • To help with exploratory and descriptive statistics analysis
  • To create and maintain various management reports as they relate too the database for research studies
  • To help in entering new research data into a database
  • To hold responsibility for the management of data with a focus on quality assurance

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 367,600 computer and information systems managers in 2016, a professional closely related to that of the data manager. The largest employers of these professionals were:

  • Computer systems design and related services: 22%
  • Information: 11%
  • Finance and insurance: 11%
  • Management of companies and enterprises: 10%
  • Manufacturing: 8%

How to Become

Requirements in terms of experience and education vary depending on where a data manager works. Typically, three to five years working with data is required. Furthermore, most employers look for those with a bachelor’s degree.

Education Requirements

It is common for employers to look for someone’s with a bachelor’s in computer science or information science. Additionally, more and more data managers now hold a master’s degree. They must complete courses in mathematics, software development, and computer programming. Often, they also complete classes in management information systems (MIS), as this also focuses on business.

A graduate degree is now often required, and many data managers hold a master of business administration MBA degree. That said, work experience in an IT related field is often even more important, particularly for those wanting to take on senior management positions. Career advancement is also possible for the right person, with the terminal position being that of chief technology officer (CTO).
