The following article discusses the career path of Security Supervisor. Learn about how to become one, education requirements, job duties, traits and qualities, national salary outlook as well as top national employers of Security Supervisors.

Job Duties

Security supervisors are responsible for ensuring that all security practices are appropriate, and security staff are able to follow these practices. Their work includes making sure that all security standards are complied with and that staff fully fulfill their duties. At the same time, they look at team practices to ensure that they are as effective as possible.

They often have to examine work sites in order to identify any potential weaknesses. Once they have identified these, they report back to their own supervisor. Together, they will develop and action plan that minimizes the risks. They also communicate with people across organizations, as well as internal and external partners and clients, to ensure that needs are understood.

Other job duties of a security supervisor are:

  • To develop and put into place security policies, procedures, and standards
  • To plan for issues such as equipment, utilities, emergency preparedness, hazardous materials, life safety, and security
  • To supervise other personnel in the security team
  • To manage the operational actions and activities of the team

Where We Work

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 10,700 gaming surveillance officers and gaming investigators in 2016, a profession to which the security supervisor most closely relates. The largest employers of these professionals were:

  • Local government, excluding education and hospitals: 47%
  • Gambling industries (except casino hotels): 25%
  • Casino hotels: 19%
  • State government, excluding education and hospitals: 4%
  • Spectator sports: 2%

How to Become

A security supervisor usually has a high school diploma or GED. Those with some college education are in greater demand in the workplace. However, it is generally more important that these individuals have at least five years’ experience on the job, as well as having training in managing larger teams with at least ten individuals. They must also be able to demonstrate delegation and leadership skills.

Education Requirements

A security supervisor usually only has to hold a high school diploma or GED, although some employers do look for those with at least some college education. Of greater importance, however, is that they have significant work experience. Training is usually provided on the job, learning about proper communication, detention of suspected criminals, and emergency procedures.

It is recommended that security personnel receives a minimum of eight to 16 hours of on the job training, and that this should be repeated annually. Here, they learn about public relations, protection, deterring crises, report writing, and first aid. If the security supervisor deals with staff who are armed, further training in weapons will be required. They may also have to pass tests in using fire arms.

Further training relevant to the organization for which they work will also be provided. This includes how to use radio and video equipment, for instance. In casinos, security supervisors also learn about cheating techniques, gaming regulations, and so on.

Security supervisors usually have to be registered with their state. The requirements do vary depending on the state they live in, but usually include being at least 18, completing training, and passing a full background check. If they carry weapons, they have to go through a more rigorous screening program in which their background, fingerprints, and criminal records are checked. A driver’s license may also be required.

Traits & Qualities

The most effective security supervisors have the following traits to some degree or other:

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong judgment skills
  • Great observation skills
  • Patience
