Job Duties

Hospitality managers usually work for restaurants, hotels, casinos, and resorts. Their role relates to ensuring all employees with direct customer contact are properly supported. This means they may also have to develop training and be responsible in the recruitment of new staff. Furthermore, they usually have bookkeeping and purchasing responsibilities.

A hospitality manager focuses on making sure customers and guests enjoy a professional, friendly, and efficient service. If they have hiring responsibilities, they ensure that all staff meets the guidelines and standards as set for their particular role, which tend to differ depending on whether someone is a bartender, waiter, porter, or desk clerk. The manager ensures that staff has an understanding of the skills expected of them, and enforces these standards in all situations.

Other job duties of a hospitality manager are:

  • To manage all daily activities in the organization, including the budget and staff supervision
  • To ensure that the rooms, food, and grounds are suitable for a high quality service
  • To prepare for various customer problems and have troubleshooting scenarios in place

Where We Work

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 47,800 lodging managers in 2016. The largest employers of these professionals were:

  • Traveler accommodation: 66%
  • Self-employed workers: 24%
  • RV (recreational vehicle) parks and recreational camps: 3%

How to Become

To become a hospitality manager, it is usually necessary to have practical experience, aptitude, and education. Those who have completed a degree in hospitality management, be that an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree, usually have the greatest opportunities, but experience is usually valued more than anything. It is also common for people to get to this position through internal promotions.

Education Requirements

It is becoming increasingly common for a hospitality manager to have to hold a bachelor’s degree in hotel management or hospitality as a minimum. This demonstrates that they have been trained in hotel accounting, administration, sales, marketing, food service management, housekeeping, catering, engineering, and maintenance. Furthermore, hotel managers have to be trained in using the relevant IT systems. Around 60% of all programs in hospitality management are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration.

Sometimes, an associate’s degree is all that is needed, particularly in smaller hospitality agencies. Additionally, those who have attended courses at trade or vocational schools may be hired, particularly if they have work experience within the hospitality industry. It is expected that hospitality managers also have several years of professional experience.

Some certification options do exist, such as the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI)’s Hospitality and Tourism Management Program (HTMP). This takes two years to complete and ensures participants meet relevant professional standards. AHLEI also offers the Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics (CHIA).

  • Strong business skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
